Empire United's Dan Lynd, a 2012 graduate of Penfield High School, has signed a two year contract to play for the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer League (USL). Dan was a member of Empire United throughout his entire youth career, beginning at U9 when the club was the Rochester Jr. Rhinos.
After a successful four year career at the University of Pittsburgh, Lynd had a busy offseason which included trial offers from two different Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs, participating in the prestigious InfoSport Combine, and qualifying as an eligible player to be drafted in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft in January. At Pitt, Lynd was a three year starting goalkeeper, finishing off his prolific career ranked fourth in program history in shutouts (15) and sixth in saves (230). A two year captain and excellent student-athlete, Dan wa a two time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Academic Team member.
Prior to signing with the Rhinos, Lynd spent time on trial with Sporting Kansas City, currently the top side in the MLS Western Conference. In his first week in Kansas City, Dan spent time training with Swope Park Rangers, Sporting's USL affiliate. After success working with Swope Park, Lynd was invited to join the Sporting KC first team at the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Arizona, where a number of MLS and USL clubs spend two weeks for their pre-season preparation. Returning to KC, he was offered a contract with Sporting to train with the First Team and play with Swope Park, before opting to return to Rochester for a trial with the Rhinos.
Dan is the third Empire United graduate, and second goalkeeper, to sign a professional contract in the past three years.
On behalf of Empire United, congratulations to Dan on his successful collegiate career and first professional contract!
