Syracuse, N.Y. — Baldwinsville native and former Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono made his MLS debut on Wednesday, playing against Manchester City in an exhibition game on ESPN2.
Bono's debut for Toronto FC came during a 1-0 loss against last year's Premier League runner-up. It has been less than four months since a whirlwind week in which Bono declared early for the MLS Draft, was invited to the U.S. National Team training camp and picked sixth overall.
He has spent most of his rookie season with Toronto FC II, his team's minor-league affiliate.
Bono helped Toronto hold Manchester City scoreless until the 84th minute, when he was beaten by a nearly impossible to stop curving shot from about 26 yards into the upper-right hand corner of the net.
One of his more memorable moments, however, came 10 minutes earlier when he stopped a point-blank shot by David Silva with his face. Silva is a star on the Spanish national team. The save was part of a debut performance that served as a moment of pride for fans of the SU soccer program.
