For the second straight match, the New York Red Bulls defeated cross-town rival New York City FC, 4-0, securing a spot in the next round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
After losing 2-1 to New England last Saturday, the Red Bulls came out attacking from the opening kick, scoring a goal two minutes into the match, by Vincent Bezecourt, which was his first career first-team goal. The team continued to create scoring opportunities and notched three unanswered goals after the opening score.
Daniel Royer had a huge night and scored twice in a span of two minutes.
Prior to tonight's match, Royer had scored two goals the entire season. Head coach Jesse Marsch spoke about Royer's performance after the match.
"One of the big positives on the night is Danny getting two good goals," Marsch said. "Danny is a big player for us here and although he has not scored at the rate he has last year, he will."
Ryan Meara recorded his fifth career Open Cup clean sheet and talked about the importance of winning games in this tournament.
"It's just a chance to win a trophy," Meara said. "Obviously, that's what we're striving for at this club and we've come up short too many times. It's just another big opportunity to win something. I think being so close last year and kind of being almost able to taste it and then lose on the night in Kansas City, that sticks with us. So, it's another opportunity and we're going to put our best foot forward."
The Red Bulls are now 8-3-1 against NYCFC across all competitions
